The Bureau of Labor Statistics cites that volunteers spent a
median of 52 hours on volunteer activities during the period from September
2014 to September 2015. Among those who volunteered, median annual hours
spent on volunteer activities ranged from a low of 36 hours for those under
35 years old to a high of 94 hours for those aged 65 and over. According to
The Corporation for National and Community Service, in 2015, 1 in 4 Americans
volunteered 7.9 billion hours, which equated to an estimated value of $184
billion! In fact, volunteering has increased by 60% since 1974, when
President Nixon created the first National Volunteer Week!

Fringe Benefits in the Prevailing Wage World
The purpose of this article is to increase the awareness of the requirements related to federally funded Davis Bacon construction projects. Established in 1974, Interstate Mechanical Corp. is a mechanical contractor located in Phoenix, Arizona that specializes in HVAC within commercial construction. In the past year, we were contracted to perform specialty welding on large piping at a power plant located west of Phoenix. This project was federally financed and therefore required us to pay the prevailing wage and fringe benefits to all laborers and mechanics as specified under the Davis Bacon Act. The Department of Labor, Wage & Hour Division (DOL) is a federal agency that enforces compliance with all provisions of the Davis Bacon Act.
