'Shovel-ready' bullet train construction delayed again

Image
The start of construction on California's bullet train, one of the nation's largest "shovel ready" public work projects that was awarded stimulus funding three years ago by the Obama administration, is slipping past already-delayed target dates, interviews show. In early 2012, state officials said construction would begin that year. Early this year, officials adjusted their sights, saying they would begin building the massive new transportation network in the spring, later announcing the groundbreaking would take place in July. Now, it appears that serious construction may not begin this year, and could be delayed into 2014. Factors contributing to the sluggish start include delays in getting a construction company under contract and lack of key federal permits. This section of California 58 in Kern County is roughly a quarter mile south of the route for a bullet train between Los Angeles and San Francisco proposed by the California High-Speed Rail Authorit

Crossrail tunnel project uncovers ancient burial ground - including Bedlam patients

Image
Crossrail, Britain's biggest construction project and the biggest archaeological dig in London for years, has uncovered everything from a Roman road to a 2,000-year-old horseshoe. And now the bones of long-dead Londoners have been added to the haul. And some of the archaeologists' most delicate work involves remains from the Bedlam burial ground, established in the 16th century underneath where Liverpool St station now stands. Thousands of Londoners were buried in the grounds for a period of about 150 years, from paupers to religious nonconformists to patients at the adjacent Bedlam Hospital, the world's first psychiatric asylum. Its name, a corruption of Bethlehem, became a synonym for chaos. House resolution says no action on immigration until border is secured

Image
Opponents of the Senate's immigration bill have put forward a resolution saying the House should not consider any immigration plan until states on the southern border confirm that border is secured. The resolution, H.Res. 330 , is sponsored by Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), and co-sponsored by Reps. Steve King (R-Iowa.), Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) and several other Republicans who have spoken out against the Senate immigration bill. Many Republicans are worried that even passage of a House border security bill might lead to a House-Senate conference that produces a bill that includes language creating a path to citizenship for illegal residents. For that reason, the resolution states that no bill, "including any conference report regarding immigration," should be considered on the House floor until the southern border is secure. The resolution finds that existing immigration laws need to be enforced "vigorously and uniformly," and that the government

Construction Unemployment Hits 9.1 Percent, Lowest July Mark Since 2008

The unemployment rate for construction workers fell to the lowest July level in five years last month, even though employment has stagnated in the past four months, according to an analysis of new government data by AGC of America. Association officials urged Washington leaders to act on stalled infrastructure funding measures to help jump start construction hiring. “Although the unemployment rate for experienced construction workers came down to 9.1 percent in July, many of those workers have left the industry for other jobs, school or training programs, or retirement,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. “While the industry has added workers in the past year, employment growth has been negligible recently.” Read the press release here .
