SYNOPSIS:
If you have attended a
presentation on responding to an Active Shooter event, you understand how
important it is to develop advance strategies for your business to attempt to
minimize the impact of this crime. However, you may not know how to
proceed to formalize these strategies into your Safety Plan, Emergency Action
Plan, or similar document. It is one of the most horrifying experiences
that can occur. Unfortunately, in today's society, it is something we
should discuss, understand, and for which we must be prepared. This
presentation will discuss the steps that should be considered when formalizing
an Active Shooter protocol for your business.
We will commence with a quick
review of the general characteristics of these incidents and the perpetrators,
with an emphasis on the lessons learned from past events. We will then
discuss how to develop written protocols to respond and recover if an active
shooting event occurs at your work environment. This portion will include
recommended current best practices that should be addressed in your plan
including individual and institutional preparedness; immediate actions steps;
tactical options, including the run-hide-fight principle; interaction with
emergency responders; and recovery, including business continuity planning and
return to normal operations. However, it is critical to note that these
events are highly chaotic and unpredictable. As such, multiple options
will be discussed and some of the options may not be suitable for your unique
environment.
We will conclude the session
with a Q&A segment and a list of available resources for continuing
preparedness.
NOTE: While this is an independent presentation and can
stand-alone, it is designed to build on the principles in my Active Shooter
Incident Fundamentals program.
