Centralized Licensing and Reporting of Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT) Begins Jan. 1 Effective January 1, 2017, the Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) will become the single point of administration and collection of transaction privilege tax (TPT). The transition to centralized licensing, reporting and payment of state and city TPT to ADOR begins with the January 2017 tax return which is due in February. When filing the January 2017 TPT return in February 2017, all activity needs to be filed on a single return with ADOR regardless of where the taxable activity is located in Arizona. Previously, businesses may have filed two or more TPT returns, one with ADOR and another with the city or cities where their taxable activity occurred. It is important to note that if a business that needs to file TPT returns has an outstanding balance for tax periods prior to their January 2017 activity, those returns and payments must be filed ...

Arizona Business Leaders Sue the State Over Wage Increase and Sick Time

December 15, 2016, several Arizona employees and business leaders, including Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Arizona Licensed Beverage Association, and others filed a lawsuit against the State of Arizona, et al. in Maricopa County . The suit claims Proposition 206 is unconstitutional. Proposition 206, a ballet measure which passed in November, raises minimum wage and mandates paid sick time. The lawsuit argues that Proposition 206 (aka The Fair Wages and Health Families Act) is invalid on two grounds: that it violates a constitutional provision requiring funding to have a specified funding source; and the proposition included two separate issue provisions - a higher minimum wage and paid sick time for employees - in a single ballot measure (in opposition to the single-subject rule). The suit asks for an injunction to block the law, which is set to take effect on January 1, 2017 for the min...

Not a Big Surprise......

Federal judge issues a nationwide injunction prohibiting the Department of Labor from implementing and enforcing its expanded overtime regulations previously scheduled to take effect December 1, 2016.   Several states and business plaintiffs prevailed against the Department of Labor in court on November 22, 2016 by obtaining a nationwide injunction against the DOL’s Final Rule taking effect December 1, 2016. United States District Judge Amos L. Mazzant of the Eastern District of Texas found the plaintiffs satisfied all prerequisites for a preliminary injunction, showing a likelihood of success in their challenge of the rule as well as irreparable harm if it went into effect as scheduled, while the DOL failed to show it would be harmed if the rule were delayed. The Department is now prohibited from implementing and enforcing the Final Rule pending further order of the court. (An electronic copy of ...

Earlier this year, torrential rains and severe flooding in southeastern Louisiana meant CFMA members local to that area desperately needed our help; some lost everything. VoS CFMA made a donation that we hoped would help one of our fellow members. We have heard from that member and I would like to share this with you: As we continue to rebuild our home and lives after the flood I cannot even begin to explain or put in to words how grateful and completely overwhelmed with all of the support we have received following the flood.  It is amazing to sit back and grasp just how generous individuals, from all over, have been to my family in these past three months.  Your donations have helped us out tremendously with putting our lives back together and move forward.  This experience has shown me how lucky of an individual I am to be part of such a great and thoughtful organization.  It really is hard to try and grasp how people from all over have taken tim...

Did you know that 51 families slip into homelessness each week in Maricopa County?

Image
Fortunately, there is a place for homeless families to go where they can get the safe shelter, supportive services, and affordable housing they need to reach their greatest potential. That place is UMOM New Day Centers. UMOM provides a continuum of care for families, giving them the tools and support they need to get back on their feet. This year CFMA pledged to help UMOM by participating in their 7th Annual Walk for Homeless Families. The walk was a fun and inspirational way to raise awareness about family homelessness and raise critical funds for UMOM. A number of VoS members showed up to a walk or made financial contributions to help UMOM. The Team goal was $1,500 -VOS committed to matching those member donations up to $1,500. At the end of the day, the Team raised $3,665! Help CFMA Members in Southeastern Louisiana

Image
As CFMA chapters have a tradition of helping each other in times of need, it’s time for us to once again come together. Torrential rains and severe flooding in southeastern Louisiana means CFMA members local to that area desperately need our help; some have even lost everything. Your donation can help fellow CFMA members who have been impacted. 100% of all contributions* will directly benefit your fellow CFMA members who call southeastern Louisiana home. Additionally, in the spirit of Building It Forward , CFMA’s Chairman’s Fund has pledged $3,000 and Valley of the Sun has pledged $1,500 to support this cause. Please share this link with anyone who wishes to help. All chapter and individual donations are appreciated and no amount is too small. *Contributions collected by CFMA will be forwarded directly to affected members in need and are not tax deductible. Contact us at info@cfma.org with any questions.
